Simple Steps For A Long Lasting Knee Replacement

December 21, 2017

Most patients stop thinking about their knee several months after their surgery. That is a mistake. To get the best possible outcome after a total knee replacement, Blanda Orthopedics & Physical Therapy recommends three simple steps that can make a huge difference.

First, you must continue to do the leg strengthening exercises you were taught in physical therapy. It only takes ten minutes to do the most important routine of alternating a “wall sit” with a “flamingo” three times in a row. If you are unsure of how to do this exercise, contact Dr. Blanda or his staff.

Second, manage your weight to minimize the impact on your joints. This will help prevent deterioration of your back, hip, knees, and feet. Fat cells produce an inflammatory chemical that can increase pain and inflammation in your joints and tendons. These are two important reasons to maintain a healthy weight.

Last, strive for an anti-inflammatory nutrition plan. You can get an easy to follow hand-out at our office, and read more tips on our blog on  Following an anti-inflammatory nutrition plan will help prevent or minimize further orthopedic disorders as well as many medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and coronary heart disease.

At Blanda Orthopedics & Physical Therapy, we want to help you lead an active life style without pain or the need of surgery. However, if you do need surgery, our preconditioning program and pre-surgical preparation, as well as post-operative therapy will get you the best results for a long lasting knee replacement.
