Every day while seeing patients in my office I hear someone say "who said the golden years are golden"? or "aging is not for the faint of heart". Obviously everyone I see has a painful orthopedic problem, so this is not surprising. But does aging have to come with loads of orthopedic problems, one surgery after another? Do you have to wake up stiff and sore? Are your activities limited by your "bad joints"?
Everyone wants to enjoy life, and to do that requires the ability to walk and not be distracted and distressed with pain. There are things you can do to age with less pain and dysfunction:
1. Exercise is the best medicine. Whether you go to a gym on a regular basis or have your home routine - "just do it"! Be sure to include stretching, aerobics, and resistance strength training in your routine.
2. The foods you eat can either fight pain and disease or contribute to it. It is your choice whether you eat a healthy, high protein, low carbohydrate food plan OR one full of bad carbs and sugary drinks.
3. Seek help from an orthopedic surgeon if pain begins to slow you down. At Blanda Orthopedics and Physical Therapy, we can help you stay on track with an active and enjoyable lifestyle.
